The Authority of the Prophetic Sunnah and Some of Its Proofs from the Qur’an and the Purified Sunnah
This article offers a concise defense of the authority of the Prophetic Sunnah as the
second source of Islamic legislation after the Qur’an. It argues that the Sunnah is not
an optional supplement to revelation, but a binding explanation of it and a form of
guided instruction received by the Messenger of Allah.
The discussion begins with Qur’anic evidence commanding obedience to the Messenger and
describing his speech in matters of religion as revelation. It then reinforces that claim
with hadith reports, including the well-known statement that the Prophet was given the
Book and something like it along with it.
From there, the article highlights the practical labor by which the Companions and
Successors preserved the Sunnah: memorization, writing, teaching, transmitting scrolls,
and later compiling hadith collections. It also gestures toward the scholarly safeguards
that distinguish between authentic and weak reports and answer objections about early
documentation.
Its main conclusion is straightforward: belief in the authority of the Sunnah is a core
part of faithful submission to revelation. The Muslim is therefore called not only to
affirm that status intellectually, but to live by the Prophet’s guidance in the whole of
life.
