Reflective and Methodological Pauses with the Tafsir of Surat al-Ahqaf

Faith-centred, methodological and reflective pauses with Surat al-Ahqaf: the divine source of the Qur'an, the creation of the universe in truth, the truthfulness of prophethood, tawhid, steadfastness and honouring parents, Allah's ways with nations that deny, the faith of the jinn, and patience as the provision of those who call to Allah.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Praise be to Allah, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, his Companions and all who follow his guidance. To proceed:

Surat al-Ahqaf is a Meccan surah in most of its verses, though some scholars point to the presence of Medinan verses in it. Classifying surahs as Meccan or Medinan calls for careful, methodical study, because consensus on it is rare and most opinions rest on independent reasoning (ijtihad). This is where relying on authentic reports matters, whether they go back to the Prophet ﷺ or stop at the Companions, so that this science is kept precise and students of knowledge reach sound conclusions.

This noble surah holds pauses of faith, of method and of reflection, which this article highlights in the hope that Allah makes them beneficial.

First: The Source of the Qur’an and Silencing the Polytheists

Allah, Glorified and Exalted, opened the surah with separate letters that challenge the Arabs with the eloquence of the Qur’an, and followed them by affirming His attribute of highness (al-‘uluww) in His words: “The revelation of the Book is from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Wise” (al-Ahqaf 46:2), since something can only be “sent down” from above. The Noble Qur’an is the speech of Allah, which He originated and revealed to Jibril, peace be upon him, to convey to the Prophet ﷺ without alteration. This is a decisive answer to the false claims of some Orientalists about the source of revelation. The revelation of the Qur’an passed through stages: from the Preserved Tablet, then to the House of Honour (Bayt al-‘Izza) in the lowest heaven, then it came down in parts upon the heart of the Prophet ﷺ according to events over twenty-three years.

In silencing the polytheists, the Qur’an demanded that the disbelievers bring textual proof from an earlier scripture such as the Torah or the Gospel, or some trace of knowledge supporting their polytheism, and so exposed their complete inability to prove their position. It also made clear that false objects of worship will disown those who worshipped them on the Day of Resurrection and become their enemies.

Second: The Universe Created in Truth, and Its Certain End

Allah the Exalted made clear that the creation of the heavens, the earth and what lies between them was not in vain, but in truth and for a specified term. He said: “We did not create the heavens and earth and that between them except in truth and [for] a specified term” (al-Ahqaf 46:3). This requires a person to be detached from this world and to reflect on how short his life is compared with the life of the heavens and the earth, all of which are destined to perish, and this drives him to flee to Allah and prepare for the Hereafter.

Third: The Inimitable Qur’an and the Truth of Prophethood

The disbelievers rejected Allah’s clear verses, called them obvious magic, and claimed that the Prophet ﷺ had invented the Qur’an. The Qur’anic answer was decisive: had the Qur’an been the Prophet’s own composition ﷺ, it would not contain verses that reproach him and direct him to correct particular positions (as in Surat ‘Abasa and Surat al-Anfal). These verses are conclusive evidence of his integrity and that the Qur’an is divine revelation free of personal inclination.

Beyond that, the Qur’an contains scientific signs that came centuries ahead of their time, such as its indications of the roundness of the earth and its rotation, the development of the embryo within three darknesses, the role of mountains in stabilising the earth, and how rain comes down. That such precise facts came on the tongue of an unlettered Prophet who received no human schooling proves with certainty the divine source of this Book. The Qur’an also cites the testimony of the scholars of the Children of Israel to the truth of the Prophet’s message ﷺ, such as the testimony of ‘Abd Allah ibn Salam, may Allah be pleased with him.

Fourth: Tawhid, Steadfastness, and the Rank of Honouring Parents

The Noble Qur’an ties pure tawhid to practical steadfastness. Allah the Exalted said: “Indeed, those who have said, ‘Our Lord is Allah,’ and then remained on a right course - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve” (al-Ahqaf 46:13). Outward observance is not enough unless it rests on a tawhid firmly rooted in the heart and reflected in the limbs.

Among the greatest forms of steadfastness and righteousness that the surah stresses is kindness to parents. Honouring parents is not merely maintaining family ties; it is one of the foundations of the religion. The Qur’an singles out the mother for greater appreciation because of the hardship of pregnancy, which Allah described in His words: “His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship” (al-Ahqaf 46:15). The Qur’an set the period of pregnancy and weaning at thirty months, which establishes that a pregnancy of six months at minimum is valid.

Allah commanded lowering to the parents the wing of humility out of mercy. Humility is symbolised by clay, which is marked by calm, while arrogance is symbolised by fire, which rises upward; so a son must be humble before his parents however high his standing. Allah warned even against the least sign of displeasure, such as saying “uff”, for undutifulness to parents is a major sin whose punishment Allah hastens in this world before death.

Fifth: Allah’s Ways with Nations That Deny (the People of ‘Ad as an Example)

The surah recounts the story of the Prophet Hud, peace be upon him, with the people of ‘Ad in al-Ahqaf. The people of ‘Ad met Hud’s call with mockery and dismissal, and demanded that the punishment be hastened instead of responding to the truth. When they saw a cloud advancing toward their valleys, they took it for a rain cloud bringing good, but it was a barren wind that destroyed everything by the command of its Lord.

In this is a grave warning to the people of Mecca and to every nation that is arrogant toward Allah’s way. The people of ‘Ad were given more power on earth than Quraysh, yet their hearing, their sight and their hearts availed them nothing when they denied the signs of Allah. The blessings Allah grants a person are worthless if they are not used in obeying Him, and material strength cannot turn back Allah’s punishment.

Sixth: The Faith of the Jinn and the Degrees of Certainty

After the people of al-Ta’if rejected the Prophet’s call ﷺ and harmed him, Allah brought to him a group of jinn to listen to the Noble Qur’an. As soon as they heard the verses, they listened attentively to the truth and grasped its greatness, then returned to their people as warners, saying: “O our people, respond to the Caller of Allah and believe in him; Allah will forgive for you your sins and protect you from a painful punishment” (al-Ahqaf 46:31).

In speaking of punishment and recompense, the degrees of certainty become clear. The disbelievers who denied the resurrection will be exposed to the Fire, and they will move from “knowledge of certainty” to “the eye of certainty” and then to “the truth of certainty” as they suffer the punishment. Then they will be asked in rebuke: “‘Is this not the truth?’ They will say, ‘Yes, by our Lord’” (al-Ahqaf 46:34).

Conclusion: Patience, the Provision of Those Who Call to Allah

The surah closes with a great divine instruction to the Prophet ﷺ and to every caller after him to arm himself with patience in the face of harm and denial: “So be patient, [O Muhammad], as were those of determination among the messengers and do not be impatient for them” (al-Ahqaf 46:35). However long and grand this world may be, on the Day of Resurrection it will seem to those who denied as though it were only an hour of a day. The Qur’an is the true message and provision of the believer. We ask Allah to make us among the people of the Qur’an, to grant us steadfastness upon it, to accept from us the best of what we have done, and to pass over our misdeeds.

And praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
