A Note on the Conditions of a Word Taking Alif and Lam

This article offers a brief linguistic reflection on the Arabic definite article and the different meanings that arise when a word is coupled with alif and lam. Drawing on themes discussed by Imam al-Shafi’i in al-Risalah, it shows that the article may indicate specificity in some places and generality in others, depending on context and the meanings of prior reference, comprehensiveness, and genus.

When the article points to something specific and already known, it is treated as alif-lam al-‘ahdiyyah. The article gives the example of the word “the messenger” in a Qur’anic verse about Pharaoh, where the intended referent is clearly a known individual, namely Musa عليه السلام. In such a case, the article does not indicate open-ended generality but a particular previously understood referent.

When it indicates generality, however, the article may function in at least two ways. It may be comprehensive and exhaustive, covering all members of a class, as in statements that include all of the righteous without exception. Or it may be generic, pointing to an unspecified member of a type, as in the command to slaughter “a cow,” where the requirement concerns one member of the category rather than every member of it.

The article concludes by emphasizing how central these distinctions are to understanding Qur’anic language and legal interpretation. A seemingly small linguistic marker can significantly affect whether a text is read as universal, specific, or representative of a whole class.
